Awbury Arboretum Visit

March 10th 2016

Today we visited the beautiful Awbury Arboretum, which is luckily right across the street from our school, Wissahickon Charter Awbury. The weather was great and the scenery was beautiful. We walked around with our tour guide and nature expert Nancy Pasquier.

As we walked and viewed the amazing Arboretum, we sketched inspirations and took some photos. 

Nancy guided us and told us all about the different kinds of plants and animals that are native to Pennsylvania, and live in the area such as, Weeping Willows, Red Woods, Oak, Cherry Blossoms, Locust, Cat tails, and invasive plants like Phragmites. It was awesome learning about where we live and what animals and plants contribute to our environment, as well as getting to draw out some ideas for our mural.

After going on our tour of the Awbury Arboretum, we got a much closer look at nature and many cool ideas that we would incorporate into our mural!

Mural Tour with Philadelphia Mural Artist Willis

Today we toured around the city of Philadelphia, mural capital of the world, and observed some of the city’s great murals. We viewed murals that were both realistic and artistic. They had stories and meaning, which helped us get some ideas to design our mural.

Looking at the different murals, we noticed a lot of shading. Some murals were very colorful, others were monochromatic. Many times, Willis worked with the community to develop the ideas or even to help paint the murals.

Some of the murals were painted in a square grid using cloth and then attached to the wall. We noticed the brushstrokes and patterns used in the murals. It was bigger and nicer to see the murals in person. We could observe more detail and see how it fit into the environment.

together to create a symbol of our school and community. Our school has an

environmental mission. We respect and love the earth. This mural will show our

school values and school pride.
